Jean Degottex

Born on the outskirts of Lyon in France in 1918, Jean Degottex emerged as a pioneering force in abstract art. His early artistic journey was shaped by studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice and the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Influenced by these formative years, Degottex began his career navigating through geometric abstraction, gradually evolving to incorporate gestural and calligraphic elements.

His exploration of Eastern philosophies, particularly Zen principles, became a defining aspect of his work. In the post-war era, Degottex’s innovative approach to abstraction garnered attention, establishing him as a key figure in the Parisian art scene. His contributions were acknowledged with prestigious awards, including the Prix Kandinsky in 1954.The interplay of form and space, coupled with bold brushstrokes and intricate ink washes, characterized his distinctive style.
